Paul Newey leads for day 2 of EPT12 grand Final €10K High Roller
The 47-year-old financial tycoon is no stranger to the EPT High Roller scene and came close to snagging a trophy when he finished second to Leonid Markin in the EPT11 Prague €50k Super High Roller, earning €557,090. Six months prior to that, Newey finished seventh in the $1m WSOP One Drop High Roller for over $1.4 million. He's a regular face in the highest buy-in events all around the world and the vast majority of his $2.6 million in live tournament winnings come from high roller events. Newey is closely followed in the chip stacks by fellow businessman, 68-year-old Jean-Noel Thorel from France who has 189,000. Thorel's amassed more than $1.9 million in live tournament winnings but has yet to win a major title. His resumé includes numerous great results including three EPT High Roller runner-up finishes. At EPT Deauville in 2009 and 2015 and, most recently, in the EPT12 Prague €25k High Roller when he was runner-up to Rainer Kempe. The €393,200 prize was the biggest cash of his live poker career.
Other notables who survived with a big stack were Stephen Chidwick (173,000), Bryn Kenney (168,000), Jason Wheeler (137,000), Kully Sidhu (137,000), Steve O'Dwyer (133,700), Andrey Zaichenko (131,700) and Charlie Carrel (130,300).
