WPT Prague day 1B: Qualifer Josh Cranfield Bags Massive Lead

Welsh partypoker.net online qualifier Josh Cranfield bagged a massive overall chip lead with 176,400 on Day 1b of the 2015 World Poker Tour Prague Main Event, followed by the GPI Player of the Year leader Byron Kaverman.

Welsh player and partypoker qualifier Joshua Cranfield was today’s hero at King’s Casino in Prague, but just as at the end of Day 1A yesterday, several tough pros lie in wait behind him to chase down the new overall chipleader as a top quality field produced yet another day of quality as well as quantity.

Cranfield is certainly the story of the event so far, albeit as early as Day 1, because the young man who qualified for just 12 pounds ended the day with 176,400, not far off double yesterday’s chip leader. That is impressive in itself, but considering the quality of the table-mates he battled all day on Table 1, it is even more so. Charlie Carrel, Stephen Chidwick and many other came and took him on, but as the dust settles and the players who made it through look forward to Day 2, Cranfield’s name may be one they have to look up. To date, the young Welshman has just over $1500 in live cashes to his name. But he performed brilliantly in high pressure pots from start to finish to consistently and deserves the lead.

A whole host of big names made Day 2, with Eugene Katchalov, Pierre Neuville, Fedor Holz, Pablo Gordillo and Dermot Blain all surviving to fight another day. but perhaps the biggest and most immediate threat to Cranfield’s chip-lead is in the form of the American sensation, Byron Kaverman. With $3.4m in live cashes in 2015 alone and a half-million dollar win just a few short weeks away, Kaverman played here like he has done all year, like a machine. Clearly on a heater and matching his well-earned confidence with no little skill, Kaverman will be tough to stop.

We may not have encountered the eventual 2015/2016 Season WPT Prague Main Event champion, as players still have until the start of Day 2 to register for forty big blinds. We’d imagine some pretty good players will be the ones taking up that option.

There are the 109 survivors from 173 entries here on Day 1b. In total, that makes 233 entries, creating a prize pool of a whopping €699,000.
