Chinese man accused of running illegal gambling site
Zhou allegedly built the site using capital of some $61.8bn in 2011 and made a massive $89.6 million profit before he was forced to flee China in 2014.
His escape into Vietnam prompted the International Criminal Police Organisation to issue a red notice for him, and then a year later the Chinese Ministry of Public Security sent a formal request to the Vietnamese government for his arrest.
At the end of last month he was finally apprehended by a special task force comprised of both Hanoi and Chinese police officers at a restaurant in the Vietnamese city, and has since been deported back to mainland China.
"Arresting escaped suspects is a cooperation between the two sides”, said Chinese police councillor Zhao Wanpeng. “I believe that with the efforts of both sides’ police forces we will keep improving the results of our cooperation in the future.”
The Chinese government stepped up its crackdown on gambling back in 2011 after arriving at the decision it was a vice - along with a few other criminal activities such as prostitution - that needed to be eliminated.
