Paul Phua Rubbishes Triad Links
It turns out that the claims the FBI made that Phua was a "high ranking member" of the 14k Triad came out of nothing more than a single reference from a police officer overseas, who was actually reporting on someone else entirely, and when the Feds looked further into the claim they found it to be entirely without basis.
It would also appear that the claims that Phua was the mastermind behind a huge World Cup sports betting operation from his Caesars Palace villa during the 2014 WSOP, are also completely unjustified. In fact, according to the interview, "Phua emphasized that the gambling operation found by the government at Caesars was in an entirely separate villa that he had never visited and that he had not placed or taken any bets with it." This is the reason Phua decided to inconvenience himself and defend himself against the US Government rather than take a plea. In his own words, "The truth is that I was not guilty of the crimes they charged me with, and I'm not a 14k Triad, and that's why I stayed on to fight the case at the risk of jail time."
In the interview Phua talks about his journey from sports bettor to junket operator and investor, and his infatuation with poker, where he will often play sessions of 30-40 hours, sometimes up to 60 hours for astronomical stakes.
