PokerStars responds over TCOOP botting scandal
“At the conclusion of our major tournaments, PokerStars regularly reviews accounts to ensure that they played in accordance with our rules”, wrote Head of Public Relations Michael Josem via the forums of 2+2 (full post here).
“As is our routine practice, PokerStars has investigated this account for possible use of prohibited software and we are confident that the tournament was not played by a bot, and that the gameplay decisions were made by a human being. We have made that judgement based upon our bot-detection tools.”
“Currently, we don’t have an explanation for why the player didn’t join in discussions for a deal, and, in accordance with our normal reviews, our investigations will continue until we are comfortable with the activity on this account.”
As we publicised last week, suspicions were raised during the heads-up encounter between Finland’s ‘LuckboxStami’ and Russia’s ‘IvanHaldi’ at the final table of TCOOP Event #08.
Although both players supposedly clicked the “discuss deal” button available to them, ‘IvanHaldi’ failed to respond in chat for almost an hour, despite the best efforts of PokerStars moderator ‘MatthieM’.
The moderator tried translating messages in Russian, contacting the player via special staff private chat within the client, and even dialling the mobile phone number the player entered in association with the account upon creation.
Alarmingly, the ‘IvanHaldi’ account had been active on PokerStars in at least one other tournament during the TCOOP final table confusion, and despite failing to respond, began silently playing the heads-up match again with ‘LuckboxStami’ as soon as they were permitted to continue.
